E-Mail Scams: How to Avoid Them

I am quite confident that everyone has had an e-mail scam come through their inbox at some point. I receive an average of five a day. Here are some things that you need to watch out for to make sure that you don’t get scammed.
User Name and Password Update
One of the most common scams is targeting E-Bay and Pay-Pal users. I usually receive at least one pay-pal scam e-mail a day. They are very convincing. I’ve almost fallen for one myself! A typical e-mail will tell you that you need to verify your username and password to avoid deactivation of your account. This can be scary, especially to someone who’s working online and makes money through E-Bay and Pay-Pal. Whenever you see an e-mail asking you to verify your user name and password, never do it through e-mail. These companies will not ask you to verify this information through e-mail. Log onto the site in question, and take a quick look at your account. If everything looks ok, chances are that it is. Just as a standard routine, you should change your password for any site that deals with financial data for you every 30 days. It’s just an extra way to make sure that you are protected.
Fraudulent Credit Card Activity
Another common e-mail scam is from someone posing to be your credit card company. They will tell you that they have detected what may be fraudulent activity on your account, and need you to verify your information. If a credit card company suspects fraudulent activity on your credit card they will contact you by phone. If you get an e-mail like this, never respond. Call the credit card company in question using the telephone number on your statement and verify your account activity with them.
Money Transfer Assistance
This is another common scam that is going on right now. Most commonly referred to as the Nigerian e-mail scam. They have money that they’ve inherited that is stuck in a bank and they need your help with the transfer. They promise to give you a cut of the money if you assist them with the request. With these types of e-mails just delete them immediately.
Get Rich Quick Schemes
There are tons of scams out there that target the Mom who wants to work from home. They promise that you can make thousands per month by doing a very small amount of work. If it is coming to you in an e-mail, and you didn’t request the information, first of all it’s spam, (that’s a whole other article) and second of all it is probably not legitimate. If you are looking to work from home stay with sites that have solid reputations. I have a full list of over 200 companies that hire telecommuters regularly and they do not charge fees on my site.
Remember:
1. Never give out any personal information via e-mail. All of that information should only be entered onto a secure site. A secure site will typically begin with https:// instead of http://
2. When in doubt, call the company in question. They would be happy to verify any account information with you.
3. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! When it comes to the internet, there is never a stupid question.
